For several months now there's been small leaks about a new Motorola phone that will be targeted at the low-mid tier Android market, coming in as sort of a baby brother to the Moto X. At first known as the Motorola DVX due to the name used in an FCC filing, over the past couple of weeks a trademark filing and then brief appearance on the Motorola website let the name MOTO G be associated with the device. Not much was known about the specs of this device although a couple of leaks did show what are purported to be colored replaceable back covers that will offer color customization option for the phone, although perhaps not quite at the level of the MOTO X which allows for accent colors and upcoming wood backs.
Today however there's been a major leak as seen in the above promo card for Phones4U which gives us a bunch of details on the upcoming device and it definitely will be a lower to mid tier offering. Powered by a 1.2 GHz quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro, the screen will be a 4.5 inch 720p display and the phone will have a 5mp rear and 1.3mp front cameras. Android 4.3 will come preinstalled and there's no word if KitKat is in its future, although we would assume at some point. Other hardware specs to finish out are 8GB of ram, Gorilla Glass, and the usual connectivity options bluetooth 4.0, wifi and HSPA+. A nice surprise is the addition of a 'water repellent coating'. We're not sure if this means the MOTO G will have an 'IP' water proof rating or not for full submersion but it should help protect the device in rainy and humid conditions at least.
Now some might be thinking...what is the target audience for this phone? Well with prices that are expected to come in at approximately £135 ($215 US) off contract or $0 on, it's clearly targeted at the entry-mid level smartphone user and will be quite a compelling buy for some. One thing to point out is that with the release of Android 4.4 KitKat, the Android OS has been reworked to be much more stable and fluid on lower end devices and thus phones with slightly older processors such as the S4 Pro should have no problem running it, although some of the most graphically intensive games might not be completely fluid. While there's no definitive launch date, it's expected to hit Europe and the US sometime before the holidays as the Christmas themed promo above hints at. It's unknown just what MOTO X like features would be included in the MOTO G but we would expect some tricks up Motorola's sleeve in addition to the interchangeable back covers.
Previous MOTO G leaks include from the FCC, on the Motorola site and of colored back covers.GSMarena
