Moto G
« on: October 29, 2013, 11:22:17 PM »
So as many of you might have heard over the past month or so, it looks like Motorola is going to release a new phone called the Moto G very soon.  The Moto G has been leaked a few times in pictures as well as FCC and Trademark docs.  It appears to have user replaceable backs and the rumor is that it will be a slightly cheaper, lower end phone than the Moto X.  Anyone have any thoughts on this new addition to the Moto line of phones?

We've had this discussion before dB.  The 'some' that you refer to that 'are already screaming' are the people that don't understand the different architecture that the Moto X has with its x8 system.  They compare the dual core snapdragon cpu it uses with a quad core chip in say the S4 or HTC One and think it's an apples to apples comparison when it is not.

The reason it's not is because the Moto X offloads some of its most challenging tasks to a couple of custom DSP chips that the other phones don't have.  It thereby frees up the dual core snapdragon to just crunch certain tasks and it enables the Moto X to do some unique things like have the always on voice/listening ability without draining battery life nearly as much as if an entire quad core chip had to be active all the time.  The Moto X basically puts the dual core chip asleep and just uses the Custom DSP chip in a low power mode during those long stretches of time when the phone is just listening.   The competitors like the S4, HTC One, etc, can't do this..or their batteries would be dead in a few hours.  Thus...it's not an Apple to Apples comparison.

Oh, and that Dual core snapdragon is THIS year's model chip..not last years.  Don't fall into the mistake of thinking that just because a company makes dual core as well as quad core and even octa core chips that just because a model cpu has more cores that it is necessarily newer.   The company makes several different types of chips for different uses and this chip was the best for the Moto X given its functionality and battery life targets.  It's similar to say a car company making 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines.   Is an 8 cylinder engine necessarily the newest or best for all models of cars?  No of course not.  In fact, sometimes 6 cylinder or turbo charged 4 cylinder cars are FASTER than 8 cylinder cars.   It all depends on so many other factors such as weight, design, handling, drag coefficient etc of each particular car.

Now back to the MOTO G.  The Moto G will probably not have the customization options of the MOTO X...it will have snap on color backs... and maybe not the always on listening abilities either.  Perhaps it will have some of the abilities but not all.  I'm sure they'll do something to differentiate it from the MOTO X and probably sell it for $0 on contract or $3-$400 off.  It might not have the X8 architecture either.  Perhaps just a regular lower end chip like the Snapdragon 400.   Apparently the rumors are that there will also be another Motorola phone...perhaps the MOTO Z or something else that will debut after the new year that will be a 'higher' end phone.  Very little is known about it at this point however.  Perhaps this will be their phone with a 1080p display.  The Moto X however is what the company sees as its mass market bread and butter flagship phone to compete with the likes of the Galaxy S4, HTC One and Xperia Z etc.

I didn't mean to imply you..I was targeting my response at 'those others' that don't understand the x8 system and the whole reasoning behind it.  Sorry you misconstrued.
